A teen girl was caught on camera getting harassed by an elderly woman who thought it was inappropriate of the teen to sell candies outside a Target store.
As the unidentified teen from Rowland Heights, California, was trying to explain, she just wanted to make some money from selling candies.
One elderly woman, however, wasn’t about to let that slip by. She allegedly approached the teen and began verbally harassing her.
“She comes up to the little kid like, ‘Where is your license? Have you asked permission to be here?’” Andy Lizarraga, one of the customers who witnessed the incident, said in an interview with CBS. As Andy added, the woman even threatened to call the cops on the child.
Fortunately, a Good Samaritan, Jay Lopez, intervened and confronted the woman. “When I walked up, she was crying hysterically,” Lopez said of the teen girl.
The man then kindly offered to buy all of the girl’s candies for $80 in order for the abuse to stop.
“I’m buying it all!” Lopez told the elderly woman and the upset child in a video shared by Lizarraga on Facebook.
“I’m gonna come out right now and get your cash,” he added after telling the bully she should be ashamed of herself.
While it isn’t clear what prompted the elderly woman to react in such harsh way over something that didn’t concern her at all, Lopez believes that the teen being black is most likely what caused the woman to lash out at her.
“I’m not putting race into this, but I bet it would’ve been a whole different story,” the man added, saying the senior would probably react differently if the person selling the candies was white.
