Sesame Street managed to surprise viewers with a viral diversity milestone as they invited a family featuring gay parents to the show.
To celebrate Pride Month, diversity, and inclusion, the popular TV show for children invited a gay couple and their daughter for Thursday’s ‘Family Day’ episode.
The episode, which aired on HBO Max and YouTube, is the first of its kind, whereas the popular TV show hadn’t featured gay parents before.
“Sesame Street has always been a welcoming place of diversity and inclusion. So I’m so excited to introduce Nina’s Brother Dave, his husband Frank, and their daughter Mia to our sunny street,” the actor of the owner of Hooper’s Store, Alan Muraoka, said.
“I am so honored and humbled to have co-directed this important and milestone episode. Love is love, and we are so happy to add this special family to our Sesame family. Happy Pride to all!”
Throughout the years, the popular show proved its diversity efforts by introducing diverse characters such as Rosita the bilingual Mexican, Linda the deaf librarian, and Tarah, a character with a disability.
Following the appearance of gay fathers Dave and Frank, people were quick to applaud the show for taking a step further in their fight for diversity.
Praising the episode was also Sarah Kate Ellis, the president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, who said that the show sent a simple but important message to the public.
“The ‘Family Day’ episode of Sesame Street sends the simple and important message that families come in all forms and that love and acceptance are always the most important ingredients in a family,” she wrote.
