Shenzhen, a city in China, has put a ban on the consumption of cat and dog meat with its new law post the coronavirus pandemic.
Animal activists in the city have been demanding the government to prohibit pet meat consumption for years now, and the new groundbreaking accord is one of its kind in the entire country.
The legislation was passed on March 31st; 2020 by the lawmakers of Shenzhen, which abodes 13 million people and it will be enforced from May 1st; 2020.
One charity group in the city has praised this historic decision, which will be marked as a watershed moment in the history of animal protection in China.
The Yulin Dog Meat Festival, conducted annually is among the most controversial food festival in China. In this fest, thousands of dogs are killed, skinned and cooked using blow-torches prior to being eaten by the public.
Additionally, regulations also prohibit the consumption of frog, snake, and turtle meat. This legislation was passed after the country banned all consumption and trade of wild animals, a practice responsible for the outbreak of deadly coronavirus.
Moreover, government officials have denoted the new regulation as the universal civilization necessity of modern society. The officials said that they had evaluated the practical circumstances of the city prior to including species that are not deemed to be wild creatures.
The objective is to cater to the requirements of the residents of the city. According to the government document, nine types of animals are suitable for human consumption that include chickens, pigs, cows, sheep, donkeys, geese, pigeons, rabbits, and ducks.
Additionally, residents can consume aquatic animals that are permitted by the law. In the statement, the government said that in China alone, there are over 2,000 kinds of wild animal species.
So it is difficult to layout what cannot be eaten, and it might be difficult to answer what all species can be consumed.
