The 24-year-old sheriff’s deputy who got shot in a brutal ambush has reportedly been released from the hospital nearly one week after the attack.
The male deputy was shot along with his partner, 31-year-old deputy Claudia Apolinar, in an ambush that took place in Compton on Saturday night.
As seen in the surveillance footage from the scene of the ambush, the two Los Angeles County deputies were sitting in their police vehicle when an unidentified suspect approached the patrol car and opened fire. After the shooting, Apolinar managed to get herself and her partner to safety and call for help.
According to the reports, both deputies are expected to survive despite being shot in the head, whereas the 24-year-old has already been released from the hospital.
“We at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department appreciate the outpouring of prayers and support you, the public, have shown for our ambushed deputies,” Sheriff Alex Villanueva wrote in a statement on Twitter.
“I have great news, one of those deputies was released from the hospital today. He has a long road ahead for recovery. But he’s not alone. We, as a community, are in this together.”
While the sheriff didn’t open up about the condition of the other deputy that got ambushed, the 31-year-old is also expected to survive.
Previously, on Tuesday, the sheriff has also confirmed that they’ve made progress with the case by securing “promising leads” that could lead them to the shooter.
“We’re on the right path,” the sheriff insisted as he confirmed they’ve been “working day and night to identify and arrest these cowards [the shooter and the potential getaway driver].”
