There are different names of death including cancer, heart failure, stroke, and diabetes. We have used these names because these diseases lead to death.

Death is a diagnosis on its own and its signs can vary from one person to the other and change every week. However, the last hours of life are almost the same for all persons. While some people will show all the signs of dying, most people will show at least one of the following signs.

Death Rattle

The death rattle simply refers to swallowing problems. It occurs when the tongue rises above a person’s mouth and pushes food, saliva, or liquid backward.

This process is usually painful during the last phase of death. The epiglottis fails to cover the windpipe when the tongue pushes the saliva backward. Sometimes the tongue fails to propel the saliva causing the saliva to enter the lungs. Therefore, death rattle occurs when the lungs try to take breaths in the presence of saliva.

Air Hunger

Air hunger refers to a breathing problem that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are suffering or have suffered from asthma, then you know the stress experienced when you are unable to take a deep breath.

According to some experts, the discomfort caused by this problem occurs because of a mismatch between the brain and the lungs’ ability to breathe in and out.

Terminal Anxiety

It is difficult to accept that death is coming. Some people are ready to accept whatever happens, perhaps because they think that they have accomplished their purpose and lived a decent life. Other people have different thoughts.

Terminal agitation or anxiety refers to an individual’s rebellion against the imminent death. Instead of dying peacefully, a person may cry, scream, and try to run or get out of the bed. Other symptoms of this problem include metabolic abnormalities, breathing problems, and urine retention.

How to Embrace Death

I can’t tell anyone that it is easy to embrace death. The fact is that it is difficult to embrace it, but there are different ways of preparing for it. The first step is to accept it as a stage of life because we are all subject to death. Things will be easier for other people if you accept this fact. Instead of spending your last days worrying about death, consider spending them with your friends and family to show them why they should remember you.

Another helpful way of embracing death is to let the people you love know the most important things. Many people are afraid of death because they have failed to say or do certain things. Therefore, if there are things you have not accomplished, it is important to say them to the people around you. Do not die with regrets.
