Simone Biles is set to return for Olympic Gold following her withdrawal from the team and three individual finals.
She will join all-around champion Sunisa Lee, 18, in the balance beam competition, USA Gymnastics confirmed on Twitter only minutes before the 24-year-old watched her teammate Jade Carey won a gold medal in the Olympic gymnastics floor exercise.
The statement on Twitter read: “We are so excited to confirm that you will see two US athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow.”
“Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!” it added.
The balance beam competition will be her first since she withdrew from the team final competition. Without her, the U.S. still won silver.
After the team competition, Biles decided to withdraw from all-around, uneven bars, vault, and floor-exercise finals to preserve her physical and mental health.
The U.S. medaled in all four, winning bronze in the uneven bars, silver in the vault, and gold in the all-around and in the floor.
The announcement suggests that Biles has worked through her mental health issues.
But after Carey performed her floor exercise routine, Simone quickly removed her face mask and screamed loudly.
Following Carey’s gold medal win, she took the time to celebrate her teammate’s return.
“I’m really proud of her for coming back,” she told Daily Mail. “She has been through a lot. So I’m really happy and proud that she is coming back tomorrow on the beam.”
Biles is considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time. She won individual gold medals in all-around, floor, and vault at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and bronze in balance beam.
The attempt at gold on Tuesday will be Biles’ last appearance at the Olympics.
