The ‘Clean Up Woman’ hitmaker and soul legend Betty Wright died at the age of 66 on Sunday according to her niece.
“I just lost my aunt this morning…. and now my mood has changed…. sleep in peace aunty Betty Wright. Fly high angel,” the soul icon’s niece, Bella, wrote in her Sunday tweet.
In a tribute on Twitter, the singer’s niece added:
“My auntie was a legend…. she helped me get my first paychecks singing background….. and I didn’t make it to see you this past week and that’s going to haunt me …. R.I.P. Betty Wright.”
Betty Wright, also known by her real name Bessie Regina Norris, was born in Miami, Florida, on December 21 in 1953.
The soul and R&B singer and songwriter rose to fame at the age of 18 after releasing her hit song ‘Clean Up Woman.’
Throughout her career, the woman continued to give life to hits including Tonight is the Night, Where Is The Love, and No Pain.
More recently, Wright, who has been credited with influencing the R&B music industry, partnered with The Roots to create a musical album Betty Wright: The Movie.
In her decades-long career, the soul icon was nominated for a Grammy Award five times whereas she was announced the winner with her R&B Song ‘Where Is the Love’ in 1976.
The singer has released almost 40 singles and is survived by her four children Asher, Chaka, Patrice, and Aisha.
