Illinois sisters Bethany and Hannah Goralski decided to donate their kidneys after their father passed away.
Their dad, Mark Goralski, had Crohn’s disease and endured kidney failure. He died last fall, according to Good Morning America.
25-year-old Bethany told the news outlet: “We just want to make sure two less families had to go through what we went through.”
Even though their dad had previously undergone a transplant in 2011, Bethany was ready to give her kidney. However, doctors “told us at the time he wasn’t healthy enough for a transplant.”
24-year-old Hannah added: “You are just in a lull and a loss and you’re thinking about what am I going to do to stop thinking about this person.
“My dad was always giving, he was always helping others. And I thought, what a great way to honor him.”
The two underwent the procedures one month after their father passed away.
“Knowing a lot of people who have been affected by organ transplant, it felt selfish to keep my kidney,” Hannah expressed.
Both of them are encouraging others to make some research about donating kidneys.
“I would tell them to do it, I don’t regret it one bit,” Bethany said.
“I thought ‘Why wait,’” Hannah added. “If someone’s dying now and I can help them now, hopefully by then when I’m older I’ll look back and say, ‘I’m glad I didn’t wait.”
She also added she believes if her dad “was in this position, I think he would have done the exact same thing, he was always helping others.”
“I know he would be proud.”
