Social media users have once again managed to start a heated debate after claiming that charcoal face masks are racist because they resemble ‘blackface.
’
According to some Twitter users, only racists would wear a black face mask in order to cleanse their skin and pores and then throw away the mask which gets covered in the dirt once they’re done.
While some people argued that people are taking things too far, plenty of commenters supported the idea that blackface masks are racist.
“Racism is so insidious that you can promote blackface for years under the guise of ‘pore mask’ and it goes unchecked,” Nicole Paula Oliver tweeted.
“Charcoal masks look uncomfortably similar to blackface. I feel weird and will be hiding in the bathroom for 8-10 minutes,” Eliz Bee added.
“Every time I see someone on FB or IG post a picture of himself with a charcoal face mask on, I wonder why they would post that when at first glance it looks like blackface. Take care of your skin, fine. But your post still makes you look racist af,” Katie Labovitz argued.
One user even went on to suggest a less ‘racist’ alternative: “I bought a black charcoal face mask once. I looked in the mirror and was like “nope that’s and immediately washed it off. Been buying green tea ones ever since,” Logan wrote.
Not everyone, however, was impressed by the drama that social media users made out of face masks.
“Is this satire? Because using a peel-off charcoal face mask for skin care isn’t racist. People are taking this too far now,” Susie McBride commented.
“I confess I do occasionally do BlackFace when I apply a clay mask to my face. I apologize to the world for wanting clean pores. I will never do it again. I will now go and flog myself #MySecretSkinCare #StopPickingOnMe,” Coby Ascott joked.
