A math puzzle is making rounds on the internet and leaving adults scratching their heads.
While the math problem in question was created for children, most adults struggle with solving it and answering correctly.
If you’ve already forgotten everything you learned about math all those years ago, it’s time to bring back old notebooks and get to work.
In this math puzzle, you can see a series of cupcakes spread across four lines or four equations. Your task is to find out what number should replace the question mark at the bottom.
To get to the correct answer, you’ll have to tackle the problem methodically by starting with the first line before making your way down.
It would also serve you well to remember how PEMDAS/BOMDAS works in order not to make a critical mistake in the final line.
Once you’ve solved the puzzle, scroll down for the solution!
Here comes the breakdown of our math problem.
Let’s start by presuming that letter B stands for a brown cupcake, G for green, and P for the pink one.
First line: B + B + B = 60. 3B = 60, therefore B = 20.
Second line: P + B + P = 40. P + 20 + P = 40. Therefore, 2P = 20 and P = 10.
Third line: G + G + P = 20. 2G + 10 = 20. Therefore, 2G = 10 and G = 5.
Fourth line: B + G x P = 20 + 5 x 10 = 20 + 50 = 70.
The correct answer is 70! Keep in mind that you have to perform multiplication before addition in the fourth equation because multiplication has a higher priority than addition.
