While on duty, a US Border Patrol officer had been approached by a young boy who had been crying, asking for help after being abandoned near the border in Texas.
The police officer took a video, asking him in Spanish if he had been abandoned. The little boy explains that he had been with a group, but had to find someone to assist him since he had been left alone in the desert.
The child tells the officer, “It’s that I was coming with a group and they abandoned me and I do not know where they are at,”
The officer followed up with more questions to ensure the kid’s safety, asking “You do not know where they are at?” It is clear that the child had been on his own, since there was no one around him when he first approached the officer.
It is a heartbreaking moment for the child to be holding back his tears, and in the end, he sobs uncontrollably. The emotions inside probably contain confusion as to why they left him behind, and he is distraught. He was sent to the United States by his parents, but the group did not include him when they moved forward.
He tells the officer more information, “At the end they abandoned me. I have come here to ask you for help,”
More questions ensue, including the question if the child was instructed to come over to him to help. The child’s response was “I am coming because if I did not, where am I going to go? Somebody could abduct me, kidnap me. I am scared.”
The incident had been recorded on April 1st. The child reports that he took the entire night walking around the desert on his own, desperately searching for help.
To cease incidents like these to stop again, Gloria Chaves, U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector chief, advises for parents to think about their children’s well-being when they want to send them off to another country without their guidance.
She says that “it is very dangerous to expose children,” and more figures appear at the border after the migrant surge.
This is not the first incident having to deal with migrant children and unfortunate events. Recently, there were two sisters who had almost been smuggled and dropped over the 14 foot border, but luckily were rescued by agents and are in the hospital for medical evaluation.
