The venom from a very deadly spider could be the solution to helping the millions of men who have erectile dysfunction, scientists say.
Also known as Armed Spider or Banana Spider, the Brazilian Wandering Spider has a bite that can kill. But according to experts in Brazil, its venom could have helpful use.
The deadly spider is known for having venom that causes 4-hour long erections in men before they die. It is these chemicals that scientists reckon could lead to treatment better than Viagra.
Researchers created an artificial and refined form of the toxins and add it into a topical gel. In trials on rodents, it resulted in long-lasting erections without dying at the end. Just happy days.
The scientists at the Federal University of Minas Gerais produced a synthetic toxin and applied it to rats and mice with erectile dysfunction. The gel gave the animals a swelling penis that lasted about an hour.
The gel was found to have effects way better than viagra when used in combination, according to the study. Early studies also found no signs of pain or discomfort.
The study authors wrote: “Without any stimulation, a swelling of the penis lasting about 60 minutes was seen 20 minutes later.
“This result suggests that it is able to induce erection, independently of sexual stimulation.”
The study then concluded that the topical gel “may emerge as a potent new drug that can be topically administered, becoming a promising alternative for erectile dysfunction treatment.”
Study lead Professor Maria Elena de Lima told The Sun: “We believe it could fill an enormous gap in the market and help millions of people worldwide.”
