The US Army’s Green Beret is expected to be of the highest military caliber, with an undoubted loyalty to the nation.
Now, a scandal is brewing inside the Department of Justice, as it has officially charged former Green Beret Peter Rafael Dzibinski Debbins for conspiracy against the US by espionage, serving Russia. His special area of espionage had to do with chemical weaponry and the tactical dynamics related to Special Forces, one of the most important units in the US military.
Prosecutors with the Eastern District of Virginia has officially let out that Debbins’ activities span between an astoundingly long period of between 1996 to 2011.
He was so significant in the modern espionage game that he was given a code nickname by the Russians “Ikar Lesnikov.
” Debbins has also been found to have signed a formal document of oath, which basically outlined that he wanted to serve Russia.The FBI declared that “Mr.
Debbins knowingly provided information to self-proclaimed members of Russia’s Intelligence Service, the GRU,” according to the words of James A. Dawson, acting assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington field office.“As a member of the US Armed Forces, the American people and his fellow service men and women should have been able to trust Debbins with secrets and information,” said Alan E.
Kohler, FBI assistant director of the counterintelligence division, in a statement.
“Debbins allegedly fell very short of that and exploited his role in the military and his fellow service members to benefit one of our top adversaries for years.”
Debbins is from Gainesville, Virginia, and has served the US Army from 1998 until his honorably discharge in 2005. During that time, he had been leveraged to the most sensitive of national security files, give clearance by the Sensitive Compartmented Information access, according to the indictment documents.
His liege with the Russian state dates back to 1996 when he had moved to Chelyabinsk, a city nearby the country’s air force base, and participated in a study.
Debbins had been approached by a Russian intelligence agent, then and there getting persuaded by them to outline his future career ROTC program as well as his plans to join the military, designing his participation as the Russian decoy, according to FBI’s allegations.
His wife is also Russian, whose father was also a military officer.
He has now one count of conspiracy to gather or deliver defense information to aid a foreign government under is belt. The maximum sentence of that charge is life in prison.
