It goes without saying that army soldiers and policemen devote their lives for us to have a sleep peacefully while protecting us from enemies across the borders and trouble makers from inside the country.
They deserve special respect and should be applauded for their services. But unfortunately, there are incidents when even veterans and ex-army men couldn’t even get their own rights.
This story depicts this loophole of our society where some squatters stole a soldier’s home while he was away, and even police couldn’t take any action.
This is the story of, Army Specialist Michael Sharkey from New Port Richey, Florida who was serving in Hawaii. Mr. Sharkey had also served in Afghanistan too for almost 2 years.
But after completing his service, when he and her wife came back to their home in Florida, they were shocked to see that squatters had taken control over their property.
Julio Ortiz and Fatima Cardosa, who had been charged for drug smuggling were living there and when Michael asked them to leave the house, they refused to do so saying that they had a verbal agreement with Michael’s friend who allowed them to live there forever in case they could renovate the house.
Since the situation got worse, Michael had to go to Police to seek their help but you’d be shocked to know that even Police couldn’t help the army officer.
According to the local Police, they can’t force someone to leave a house if they had been living there for a while and suggested Michael seek court’s help.
Michael was so shocked! While giving an interview to a local news channel, he said, “The people that are in this house cannot produce any documentation, lease, agreement, anything that they belong in that house.”
The army officer couldn’t believe that he had served in the army to protect the lives of his country’s citizens and as a reward, he can’t even enter his own house. He further added, “They are criminals. I am serving my country, and they have more rights to my home than I do.”
Now Michael decided to think of a different plan to get his house back. Michael’s story went viral on social media and a group of military veteran bikers decided to help him by paying a visit to his home to “peacefully make the squatters uncomfortable.”
Squatters, Ortiz and Cardosa, when came to know about it, thought that it would be better for them to vacate the property before bikers come into the house and left the home running with their tails between their legs :)
Thanks to the bikers for helping the soldiers and we hope the US should make some strict laws for such squatters.
