A prominent rugby star was forced to apologize after viewers began slamming him for quoting Bible verses and declaring his love for Jesus on Easter Thursday.
Samu Kerevi’s words went viral after the man created an Instagram post in which he shared a Bible verse and said: “Thank You, Jesus, for dying on the cross for me. I love you, Jesus.”
The Bible verse that Samu shared read:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
While his most loyal fans applauded the guy for remembering our Savior on Easter Thursday, others quickly slammed the 25-year-old sportsman for ‘forcing’ his religious beliefs on others.
“I know a lot of gay kids and adults in our sport would love to hear a rugby leader like you say you love and respect them for who they are – are you willing to endorse that message?” one disappointed fan wrote.
“I hope you don’t support Israel’s comments Samu,” another one added.
After a wave of negative responses, Kerevi apologized for upsetting his followers and said his apology was directed at “anyone that I have offended in giving praise to our God on a weekend that we take off to celebrate his sacrifice for you and I.”
Samu’s unusual apology follows after Rugby Australia announced they would hold a hearing about Israel Folau in order to decide whether they should carry on with his multi-million dollar contract or not.
In one of his Instagram posts, 30-year-old Israel, who is a devout Christian, wrote:
“Warning. Drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists, idolaters. Hell awaits you. Repent! Only Jesus saves.”
