The United States government has urged American citizens who are still abroad to return home “unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.

As the State Department warned, the global coronavirus pandemic could put all overseas travel on halt, meaning that citizens staying in foreign countries wouldn’t be able to return to the States.
“Consider returning to your country of residence immediately using whatever commercial means are available,” the State Department announced on Tuesday.
In their ‘Global Level 4 Health Advisory,’ the authorities have also urged people to avoid traveling abroad and prepare “a travel plan that does not rely on the U.S. Government for assistance” in case they do.
“The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19,” the announcement read.
“In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel.”
Warning fellow Americans to be cautious when it comes to traveling abroad was also Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who urged people to “make good decisions” amid the global crisis.
“You see our travel advisories as they go out, trying to make sure they’re in step with the latest data sets we have in each – not only in each country, but in every province, county, township,” Pompeo said during a briefing.
“So we’re articulating them properly so that Americans make good decisions about whether they should or should not travel.”
