An open flame and gasoline is not a good combination, not if you want to stay healthy, that is. It should be common sense but we know that such a commodity can be quite scarce at times. But that’s why fuel trucks and gasoline stations have these helpful warning signs that warn people against smoking or having an open flame when in proximity to these highly flammable locations.
However, some people are just stubborn or plain rude, perhaps thinking that the rules don’t apply to them or that it would never happen to them. They never seem to consider that they’re not only putting themselves at risk but the people around them as well (not just their friends and family in the car, but also other innocent bystanders who may be near them).
When someone is being this rude, having words with them is sometimes not enough. That’s why one gas station worker took matters into his own hands by using a fire extinguisher on a stubborn customer who refused to put out his cigarette.
The incident happened somewhere in Sofia, Bulgaria at a gas station owned by Russia’s Gazprom. The footage was taken from the station’s CCTV camera so the clip is blurry and has no sound but the actions speak for themselves.
Two cars pull up to the pump. The car on the right has a passenger who is smoking on the front passenger seat. As he gets out, it’s obvious that he’s smoking a cigarette. He’s arguing with someone off-screen, presumably the gas station worker who’s asking him to put the cigarette out, but the man continues smoking.
The worker now comes within view and pulls out a fire extinguisher. Despite the worker taking his time, the man doesn’t react and this gives the worker the chance to direct the fire extinguisher on the man’s cigarette.
It’s quite satisfying to watch although the worker is fortunate that although the man’s three other companions got out of the car (all of them male), they didn’t beat the worker up. But with the way the worker was acting, he wasn’t going to go down without a fight if it came to that.
The worker wasn’t just following the rules on open flames, either. It was a very real safety concern. In 2013, a man from Georgia flicked a cigarette lighter near his gas tank which ignited and “severely injured” his wife. That man went on to face charges of reckless conduct.
The safety rules concerning combustibles are no joke and sometimes people need to take whatever measures they can to make sure everyone stays safe, just like what that gas station worker did.
