Bug enthusiast Alastair Brown captured the incredible moment a stick-like creature shedding its skin while clinging on to a small branch and becoming twice its original size.

Mr. Brown filmed the Macleays Spectre’s incredible transformation when he realized it was getting ready to molt.

The whole transformation took only 30 minutes.

Mr. Brown said: “I’m pretty good at spotting when one of my insects will molt and will often watch it happen. This time I decided to get a hyperlapse video on my phone.”

The video shows the insect clinging on to a small branch and a few seconds later, the insect starts shedding its skin and starts to grow.

Stick insects live for four to 10 months as nymphs and when they become adult, they live another 12 months.

The female insects live almost twice as long as males.

The female insects shed their skin around six to nine times before they reach adulthood.

You can see the Macleays Spectre in the video – one of the larger species of stick insects. The Macleays Spectre reaches an adult size of 150mm.
