The backstory of the photo of a bunch of firefighters lying on the ground has gone viral and touched people’s hearts.
The heartbreaking picture of the firefighters appearing to take a rest was first shared after the summer wildfires took the lives of over 50 people in Portugal.
According to the reports, the fires first started on June 16 and had been ravaging the country for weeks without giving the firefighters any break.
While people took plenty of pictures of the incident, one firefighter captured a particularly interesting scene he decided to share online.
The picture instantly went viral with thousands of people suggesting the firefighters were just resting or fooling around. The truth, however, is much more heartbreaking.
As it turns out, the firefighters in the photo stretched out onto the grassy ground because they were exhausted from fighting a nearby blaze.
With no time to go home and get a good sleep like everyone else, these heroes were forced to take a quick nap in the middle of a park before being able to continue protecting their community.
“After a night and a day of fighting in i.f. de góis, TB we were treated to 25 minutes of the beach, albeit concealed by smoke,” the person who took the picture said.
“These men are heroes in every rule and not those who run behind a ball and that many unjustly call heroes, even in the media,” one person replied after the man’s post went viral.
“They are all Heroes. Every fireman/woman all over the world,” another one added.
