A 39-year-old mother has 38 children and she is raising all her children alone as her husband abandoned her three years ago.
Mariam Nabatanzi, from Uganda, has six sets of twins, four sets of triplets and five sets of quadruplets, including six babies who couldn’t survive due to unusually large ovaries.
The 39-year-old lives with her children in four houses made of cement blocks in Kasawo village, Mukono district, east of Kampala, Uganda.
Doctors told her after she gave birth to her first sets of twins that birth control pills were dangerous for her due to unusually large ovaries.
Three years ago, her husband left her and now, she is raising her children alone. She said:
‘I have grown up in tears, my man has passed me through a lot of suffering,’ she said during an interview at her home, hands clasped as her eyes welled up.’
‘All my time has been spent looking after my children and working to earn some money.’
Nabatanzi does everything to earn money: hairdressing, event decorating, collecting and selling scrap metal, brewing local gin and selling herbal medicine.
The money is being used for food, medical care, clothing, and school fees.
‘Mum is overwhelmed, the work is crushing her, we help where we can, like in cooking and washing, but she still carries the whole burden for the family. I feel for her,’ said her eldest child Ivan Kibuka, 23.
Nabatanzi struggled even in her childhood as her mother abandoned her family when she was just three days old.
Her father remarried and her stepmother poisoned her five siblings. But, Nabatanzi escaped as she was visiting a relative.
‘I was seven years old then, too young to even understand what death actually meant. I was told by relatives what had happened,’ she said.
‘I started taking on adult responsibilities at an early stage. I have not had joy, I think since I was born.’
Now, she just wants her children to be happy.
