Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped at knifepoint from her Salt Lake City bedroom in 2002 when she was just 14 years old, is now a wife, a mother, an author and a motivational speaker.
She was held captive as a slave for nine months. She was rescued after she was spotted with her captor, Brian David Mitchell, who is now facing life imprisonment.
She revealed chilling details about her 9 months captivity during an interview. She said: “When he kidnapped me and was taking me up into the mountains, I remember thinking, “This is it,” he’s just going to rape and kill me. And then at one point, he did end up telling me that he had a wife that was waiting. … That moment did give me a little bit of comfort. … But as soon as I saw her, I did not have that hope anymore.”
“I just knew that she-she wasn’t there to help me, that she wasn’t there to protect me.”
“While he was raping me.point 22 | I mean, she was right there.point 45 | So, I mean, she — there was no secrets.point 82 | She knew what was going on.point 104 | And, I mean, she just was the kind of woman that — she was just evil and twisted.point 174 | … And I remember — remember when they used to force me to — to drink alcohol.point 253 |
And one time they had me drink so much — I was a 14-year-old girl, I’d never touched alcohol in my life — that I ended up throwing up and then passing out in it.point 145 | ”point 148 | 1
“And both of them just let me lie there all night. And when I woke up the next morning, I mean, my face and my hair were completely crusted to the ground. And they both laughed. She laughed. She laughed just as much as he did, if not more.”
Smart is now living a normal life after being rescued. She said in a Facebook video: “I may always be known as the girl that was kidnapped.”
“The best punishment you could ever give them is to be happy … by holding on to the past … that’s only allowing them to steal more of your life away from you.”
Smart also started the Elizabeth Smart Foundation which helps to “prevent future crimes against children” and “to address victims, survivors and families with the resources and community they need to encourage hope and empower their future.”
Smart’s story is inspiring. The way she faced this horrifying situation and became a stronger person after that is just so inspiring.
