A stranger was caught on camera picking up a sickly woman and helping her walk downstairs and carrying her upstairs because she couldn’t make the walk on her own.
While the NRG Stadium in Houston was crowded with fans of Brad Paisley who came to enjoy his performance on March 16, one elderly woman was struggling to make her way downstairs together with her daughter and granddaughters.
After Shayla Harwell, who was attending the concert with her husband and their 2-year-old daughter, saw the sickly woman struggle, she knew that her husband would be the right man to help her.
“She was having a rough time,” Shayla said in an interview with CNN. “I nudged my husband and told him that they may need help.”
Allegedly, the woman was having problems navigating the steps because she had recently suffered a stroke. She has also been in the midst of a battle with cancer.
Immediately, Thomas assisted the woman in walking downstairs and told her he’d be back for her after the concert.
“I helped her downstairs, and I wasn’t going to leave until I helped her upstairs,” Thomas, who’s been a firefighter for 15 years, said.
“I’m a senior captain in the fire department. My job is to help people. If you’re alive and breathing, you shouldn’t need an excuse to help someone else. If they need help, help them.”
After the concert, Thomas’ proud wife, Shayla, shared their story on Facebook where it instantly grabbed the attention of people from all around the world.
“Y’all I have to brag on my husband big time tonight! He made me Soo proud. As we were sitting in our seats waiting for the rodeo to start I noticed an elderly lady, her grown daughter, and 2 young granddaughters trying to come down the stairs,” she wrote on Facebook.
“The elderly lady was having a rough time. I pointed them out to Thomas Harwell and said they may need help. Not only did he help get her to her seat, but she did not have the strength to come back up the stairs. So, he carried her!”
After the post went viral, Shayla added:
“I’m almost shocked, I really honestly didn’t think it would go that far.
“She was very appreciative. When he placed her down at the top of the stairs, she was grinning ear to ear. It really touched her to have him help her.”
