Drivers in one neighborhood are being forced to disinfect their car door handles following CCTV footage that showed a stranger seemingly licking his hand and touching someone’s car.
In the clip, the man can be seen strolling along a road at night before touching his hand to his mouth.
He then approaches one parked car and then pulls on the handle. It’s not clear if he was trying to steal the car.
The narrator of the video says: “I’m bringing to your attention guys, there are people walking around in the middle of the night, walking into people’s driveways and touching the door handles of cars.
“As you can see that guy there just gone into the neighbor’s driveway, now coming into my driveway and now you can see him coming towards my driveway, touching his mouth, and then touching the door handle.”
The video has since been widely distributed and now, anxious people have become worried that the stranger’s actions might further the spread of the coronavirus.
A lot of people on Twitter warned others to disinfect their door handles after seeing the video because it’s better to be safe than sorry. According To England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty, droplets containing the COVID-19 virus can survive on hard surfaces for up to 72 hours.
A user named Steve Smith watched the video and urged people to “please clean your door handles.”
Another echoed the warning saying: “Disinfect your car door handles before getting in your cars!”
Others said it only made sense to follow that advice.
“Disinfectant in spray bottles every morning on the outside of doors and car doors is a must for me now,” said one woman.
“How has it come to this? Sick people!! We think we are safe!?”
Professor Whitty says: “Just touching it will not give you the virus: it is if you touch it and then touch your face, having not washed your hands between them.
“So, if you go on the Tube and touch the rail, that’s fine, but just be aware of what you do with your hands.
“Don’t touch your face, wash your hands and then you can do what you like.”
