Recent research conducted by the students at the University of Pittsburgh has concluded that social media is the major source of depression and anxiety for many people.
And there is indeed no doubt about it.
You scroll down your newsfeed on Faceook and it is rare to find a story or news that will inspire you (apart from some silly memes). But this story of a bullied kid with buck teeth will definitely restore your faith in humanity as he was helped by strangers who raised money for him to get the surgery.
Evan Hill, 12 years old young boy from New Zealand, was suffering from a severe case of buck teeth and became a target for many bullies.point 225 |
He was called as a ‘rabbit kid’ by his classmates who not only just called him by bad names but also used to beat him and hit him at his teeth.point 125 | But unfortunately, his buck teeth was so severe that he could hardly close his mouth and was even facing problems to talk.point 226 | 1
Evan’s parents went to doctors for consultation who told them that the surgery would need 12,000$. That was so shocking for the parents because they were hardly making both ends meet and in order to gather 12,000$ they had to mortgage their house.
Luckily Evan’s story and that of his parents’ hardship to collect that big amount was aired on TV program Campbell Live. The Tv program set up a bank account where people who want to help them financially could deposit funds.
At first, the family wasn’t expecting to receive a big amount but you will be shocked to know that viewers of the show raised over 100,000$ for the kid.
Finally, after 5 years since Evan made it to the news, he had a successful surgery and got his dream smile for the first time in his life. It would not have been possible without the generosity of the New Zealanders.
While giving an interview to a local news magazine, his mother said, “I don’t know where we would have been today without the generosity we had. We looked at probably mortgaging our house to pay for them but this came up and blew me away.”
