A brave stray dog positioned himself in front of a 2-year-old girl and risked his own life to protect the child from danger.
2-year-old Aurora Bentley first came across the black and white stray dog after he walked up to her family’s house in Sevier County, Tennessee.
“He showed up at my house about a month ago and hasn’t left,” Sima Bentley, Aurora’s grandmother, wrote on Facebook. “I’ve talked to everyone within a mile from me and nobody knows this sweet guy.”
While the family wasn’t sure who the dog belonged to, the pooch made it clear he wanted to stay with them.
“We have grown to love him but I know someone is missing him. He’s such a sweet fella and full of love,” Sima added. “If anyone is missing him please pm me. You will have to prove he is yours to take him from my home. I won’t let him go to someone I feel might hurt him.”
Soon enough, the stray dog not only gained the family’s care but also protected little Aurora from harm.
One day, the girl was playing in the yard when another stray dog began approaching her suspiciously. When the dog got close, Aurora’s protector showed up and positioned himself between her and the attacker.
“He ran across the yard and put himself in between Aurora and the other stray dog,” Sima added in an interview with WATE-TV. “The dog attacked him instead of attacking the baby.”
After the attack, the family immediately took the black and white dog, whom they named Oreo, to the vet for treatment.
Following the treatment, the Sevier Animal Care Center put Oreo up for adoption.
“At the time I was just on a mission to save the dog. I didn’t even realize what had happened and we weren’t really looking to adopt a dog,” Sima said.
Nevertheless, Aurora’s third birthday was coming up and the family knew the young girl wanted nothing more than Oreo by her side. And so, the Bentleys decided to adopt the brave pooch.
“I tell people all the time that God shows up when you least expect him. And for me, that was God putting an angel in our yard that day. I’m so grateful that we get to keep him,” the grandmother added.
“He’s going to be a very spoiled dog at this point. He’s going to go everywhere we go, he’s going to sleep in the house on a bed and whatever he wants, he’s going to get.”
