A group of animal lovers in India is making sure that stray dogs and abandoned cattle don’t starve to death amid nationwide lockdown.
As self-isolation orders were imposed throughout the entire country back in March, millions of stray dogs and cattle in India have been left to fend for themselves.
One of the activists making sure these animals still get enough food to survive is Priyanka Gusain who works with her mum, Vilochna, to deliver food to hungry mouths.
And so, the pair dons their face masks before taking to streets to distribute pellets and fodder for dogs and cattle that are now roaming the streets.
The movement involving the feeding of abandoned animals has spread across the nation whereas hundreds of activists are doing the same as Priyanka in an attempt to save lives.
“No-one is taking care of them. That thought made me do all of this,” Gusain said.
And while some people have slammed the activists for helping the animals instead of other people, the animal lovers have pushed the authorities to release so-called feeding passes that would allow them to freely walk around to feed animals.
Some have also set up fundraisers to raise money for food and local animal rescue services.
As Gauri Maulekhi of the People for Animals India insisted, working animals weren’t spared from starvation either, whereas donkeys and horses used in tourism and mining were allegedly “thrown out left, right and center.”
“If there are a hundred mouths to feed, we are perhaps able to feed only 10. There is never enough. There is a huge shortage,” she said.
