A student has divided the people after speaking out against famous Disney classics and accusing the films of being “racist,” “cringeworthy,” and “horrendously outdated and offensive.

According to Lauren Robertson, she was left shocked after re-watching eleven Disney movies she first came across as a child.

Presenting her opinion in The Tab, the Aberdeen University students newspaper, Lauren accused the majority of films of “portraying racist and exaggerated stereotypes.”

Disney

“Remember King Louie the orangutan? You probably didn’t realize when you watched it age five with all your animal teddies lined up in front of the TV, but there is a hell of a lot of criticism about him being a racist caricature,” the woman said, addressing the character from The Jungle Book.

“He and the other monkeys are shown to be foolish and criminal, and they literally sing about wanting to be able to make the white man’s fire.”

The young activist also warned the viewers about the “sneaky and quite frankly annoying” Siamese cats and said Lady and the Tramp is a story “problematic in itself.”

Among other negative remarks, Lauren has lashed out at Dumbo, which apparently has songs with “pretty problematic lyrics,” and Aladdin, which she referred to as “a white fantasy.”

Disney

“Aladdin is a white fantasy with mispronounced Arabic words and has nonsense scribbles as writing. They also have American accents?” the student suggested.

Robertson, however, didn’t stop there.

She also had plenty to say about “bestiality” issues present in Beauty and the Beast and about the “anti-feminist” approach seen in Cinderella. Needless to say, The Little Mermaid, and the fact that Ariel gave up her mermaid tail to be with the love of her life, also wasn’t spared the rant.

“Many of the films have not aged well, with characters portraying racist and exaggerated stereotypes,” Lauren concluded.

“It’s a good shout from Disney to acknowledge that many of the films would not be so well received if they were released today, that is if they were allowed to be released at all, they’re that dodgy.”
