An 18-year-old Border Force student had no idea she was pregnant until she went into labour during riot training.

Beth Martin, from St Anne’s, Blackpool, was training to become part of the UK’s Border Force. During riot training, she was doing extreme physical activity up to an hour before she went into labour.
Beth said: “I’d taken a pregnancy test two months before Maizie was born in October 2018. Someone at work had said I looked pregnant and I remember thinking how rude she was.”
“I was doing a course into uniformed public services and had my heart set on becoming part of Border Force. My education was sport-based, about 70 hours a week of intense physical activity.”
“The week before I’d had Maizie, I was doing riot police force training, where I had horses chasing me – it seemed surreal.”
After training, she experienced severe pain in her abdomen and called NHS 111. The call handler sent her to A+E after realizing she was in labour.
Beth’s baby Maizie Loraine Martin was born after 76 hours of labour, weighing 7lbs 5oz.
She said she had seven hours to prepare for the fact she was about to become a mother. Her two older brothers thought she was playing a prank.
Her father was happy but the rest of her family was in complete shock.

Beth said: “Maizie is the best thing in my life. I went back to college in September to complete my course and back to work after just three months off on maternity leave.”
“I wanted to show people what else I can achieve – and I’m prepared for anything.”
