A student pilot in Australia was put on a spot on his very first lesson after his instructor passed out, and he had to land the plane all by himself.
Max Sylvester, 29, was flying high in the skies for his first lesson in the two-seater Cessna when after an hour his instructor Robert Mollard suddenly fell unconscious.
The trainee pilot said the this is something that only happens in the movies.
While it was Max’s first lesson in that particular airplane, it was is only his third lesson overall. His wife and three young children were watching on from the ground.
Sylvester’s wife said that she felt adrenaline kicked in during the whole scene of the fight to flight on Saturday afternoon. Post the event, he rang air traffic control in Western Australia and explained the whole scenario.
In audio provided to ABC, Max can be heard saying that the instructor was leaning over his shoulder. He kept trying to keep him up, but he kept falling on him.
The controller then asked if he knew who to operate an airplane to which Sylevestor replied that it was his first lesson.
Over the next hour, the controller managed to keep Max calm and guided him through the process of emergency landing while his instructor remained completely unresponsive.
Eventually, he managed to land the plane safely within an hour at Jandakot Airport but refused to believe that he is a hero. He said that I am simply a student who is doing what he has been trained to do all along.
He further added what kept him alive was his study, and if he hadn’t studied, then he would not have been here. The instructor was taken to the hospital and reported to be in a stable condition.
