A high school has decided to boost its inclusivity by providing students with pronoun badges that they can wear in class to ensure proper gender identification.
Located in Brisbane, Australia, Redcliffe State High School has made the news after promoting inclusion of their non-binary students by releasing pronoun badges that students can wear on school premises to make it clear whether they want to be referred to as he/him, she/her, or they/them.
Speaking of their decision, school officials insisted that the badges will help the wearers by making sure people addressing them don’t misgender them.
“Pronoun badges are as simple as they sound: they’re badges with different pronouns on,” the school insisted in their Facebook post as they shared a photo of the badges.
“However, their purpose is to display to everyone what those who are wearing them define themselves as. They’re also so that people know what to refer to the wearer as.”
Soon enough, the photo went viral and people couldn’t help but praise the school for the innovative approach to be more inclusive.
“Fantastic idea. Helps all teachers, especially relief teachers, and kids to know upfront. Will see if I can convince my genderqueer teenage son to bring this idea to Indro State High,” someone wrote.
“My mother attended this school back in ‘83. Proud to see this school acknowledge and educate these young adults about self expression/identity,” another one said.
While other people went on to call the idea “amazing” and “awesome,” one person revealed: “I’m a bi trans man, and didn’t even know who I was at school – I’m sure something like this would have helped me figure things out earlier. You are saving lives.”
