A group of students surprised a lonely pensioner by appearing at his doorstep and singing Silent Night after the man expressed he felt lonely.
78-year-old Terrence appeared in a BBC TV show Breakfast and explained how lonely he feels during the festive season because he has no one to talk to and no Christmas tree at his home.
After hearing the man’s sad story, host Dan Walker partnered up with Oldham College students and brought them to the senior’s home where they sang Silent Night at his doorstep.
The kind students have also gifted the old man with a Christmas tree he so desperately wanted.
As Terrence greeted every single one of the students individually, he was reduced to tears and struggling to pull out his tissue and wipe away his tears.
After singing, the students put up the Christmas tree and performed another Silent Night before taking off and, once again, leaving the 78-year-old in tears.
“What used to happen, I used to go round to my mother’s on Christmas Day because I always cooked a meal for her here,” Terrence explained in an interview with BBC’s Breakfast.
“I always took the thing round to her, and I used to buy her little bits all the time, like cigarettes and all this sort of stuff, and I used to parcel them all up at Christmas and put them in a pillowcase and take them round to her.
“One day, I’ll never forget her saying to me, she said, ‘Do you know, without you, bringing me my presents at Christmas, I wouldn’t have any presents would I?’ I often think about that now. People on their own now don’t get any presents from people.”
The senior has also opened up about his mental health and admitted he’s been suffering from depression due to feeling isolated.
Following the compassionate actions of the students, Age UK director Caroline Abrahams spoke out and praised the youths for their efforts.
“We’ve all been moved by Terrence’s story and by seeing how much the kindness of Dan Walker and the wonderful students of Oldham College has meant to him,” she said in an interview with MailOnline.
“Just think how much of a difference we could make for lonely older people everywhere if we all do our little bit to help, especially now as winter is closing in and with Christmas just around the corner.”
