One of the original singers for The Supremes, Barbara Martin, has passed away at the age of 76.
Her death was announced on the Facebook group of the legendary Motown on Thursday.
“Our hearts go out to Barbara’s family and friends. Once a Supreme, always a Supreme,” bandmate Mary Wilson wrote.
Barbara Martin was a member of The Supremes from 1960 to 1962. She replaced founding member Betty McGlown and joined the group when its name was still The Primettes.
Florence Ballard and leading lady Diana Ross completed the group.
During Barbara’s time with the group, she signed with Motown records.
Barbara sings on most of the songs on their first album, 1962’s Meet The Supremes. However, she was not featured on the cover as she was heavily pregnant at that time.
She sang the lead on ‘After All’ in 1961 and other three members sang backing vocals. However, the release of the song was canceled because of the radio hit Buttered Popcorn.
It was in spring 1961 when Barbara record the group after the first album was recorded. No one replaced her and the musical act continued as a trio.
One internet user commented: “Probably the best female singers of all time, RIP, your voice will always be heard.”
Another wrote: “Now this is showbiz news that should be at the top of all the non celebrity stories on here.Unfortunately very sad showbiz news especially when a legend of Motown passes away who gave pleasure to so many people with their contribution to the music industry.RIP.”
A third added: “Love love the Supremes and so sad these wonderful people are passing away. Barbara gave the world the pleasure of her music, and we will remember her. RIP”
