A leading British surgeon calls for womb transplants that would allow transgender women to have children of their own.
Christopher Inglefield’s idea follows a year after a baby was born from a transplanted womb for the first time ever in the world.
The procedure took place in Brazil where a woman received the womb from a deceased organ donor.
Now, a year after the successful procedure, surgeon Christopher Inglefield suggested that such procedures could be done on a bigger scale. He also said he believes that transgender women deserve the chance to bear children.
According to Inglefield, the procedure involving a uterus transplant done on transgender women would be “essentially identical” to the procedure done on non-transgender women.
“This pioneering birth is extremely important for any trans female who would like to carry her own child,” Dr. Inglefield said during an interview with The Mirror.
“Because once the medical community accept this as a treatment for cis-women with uterine infertility, such as congenital absence of a womb, then it would be illegal to deny a trans-female who has completed her transition.”
Currently, there are no regulations which would prevent transgender women from getting IVF once they already managed to receive a transplant.
As the surgeon warned, however, obtaining the womb from a donor is a dangerous procedure as surgeons would have to pay extra attention to keeping the veins attached to the uterus undamaged.
Dr. Inglefield added that the “plumbing in” is much easier and straightforward due to vessels being connected to veins which are the same in females and males.
As the surgeon also pointed out, trans women don’t have a structure designed to carry a child due to a narrower pelvis but there would still be enough room to do it. Additionally, transgender women could take supplements to replicate the hormones that women experience during pregnancy.
As for the delivery itself, Dr. Inglefield suggested that the babies would most likely have to be delivered by C-section in order to ensure the security of the child as well as the mother.
