Celebrities and Hollywood as a whole is often ridiculed for living in the clouds, feigning like they are in a fantasy land that only has minimal connections with the real world.
However, this story shows how sometimes, a dream may indeed come true from time to time.
The two women in the center of this story is musician Taylor Swift and 18 year old Vitoria Mario. Mario had asked for the kindness of strangers to help her raise $53,000 so that she can go to college to major in math and become a mathematician.
Unlike many fake bios and stories people conjure up to take money, Mario’s story is indeed one of inspiration and hope. As a young black woman, Mario said she did not speak English at all when she moved to the UK from Portugal back in 2016.
However, through her own talents and immense efforts, Mario still managed to score excellent scores on her GCSE – the British counterpart to the SATs. Because of her incredible life story along with stellar grades, she was given an offer to study math in the University of Warwick.
The only problem that Mario faced was not that of talent but that of money. With her father that passed away and her mother still in Portugal, Mario is technically not considered a British student. This meant that she could not apply to various scholarships or loans.
Thus, Mario had nowhere else to rely on but GoFundMe, in which she described her life story and how she depends on the help of others. Miraculously, Swift ended up reading her story and decided to match the remaining amount by donating $30,000.
In a comment that she left on Mario’s page, the musician remarked how Mario’s dedication to her goal is an inspiration to her, and that she has happily donated to reach the set goal.
Regardless of all the different controversies she has been mired in, one aspect that even Swift’s greatest detractors can’t deny about her is Swift’s generosity.
In 2018, there was a similar case in which Swift donated more than $15,000 to a family whose mother had been in a vegetative state for more than 3 years. Just this year, she donated $1 million to a charity that works with communities affected by tornadoes.
