Sydney Opera House illuminated their sails with the pictures of firefighters and people helping them to put down the wildfire as a token of solidarity with them.
The pictures projected on the iconic building included the firefighting crews, the local folks helping them and others affected by the fires which have caused large scale destruction all over the country.
The pics included an exuberant choice of photos taken by photographers documenting the untiring efforts of the firefighters, volunteers and the local people.
Unlike most of the media coverage of the natural disaster that only showed the plight of billions of animals and thousands of people, the Opera House decided to display the positive sides of the catastrophe, the inspiring stories it has given birth to.
During this challenging time that demanded a lot of sacrifice, we’ve seen a number of real-life heroes who inspired and impressed a number of people.
Louise Herron, the CEO of Sydney Opera House, said they took this step to support and pay tribute to the people involved in the effort of fighting the horrific fires.
She said: “We are lighting the Opera House sails to show our collective support for everyone affected by these devastating fires and to express our deepest gratitude to the emergency services and volunteers for their incredible efforts and courage.
“As difficult circumstances continue, we want to send message of hope and strength to the people of Australia.”
The Opera House has not only made a symbolic gesture, but they are also arranging an event to raise money for firefighting activities as well as to help the people affected by the disaster.
The event that is going to raise the money will be called Comedy Steps Up. It will be held on the steps and in the forecourt of the Opera House.
The event is going to feature comedians like Tim Minchin, Joel Creasey, Kitty Flanagan, and Urzila Carlson.
All the revenue generated by the event will be donated to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund, Wildlife Victoria and Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service.
The performers of the event released a statement, saying: “Collectively, our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, the fireys who have put their lives on the line and continue to, and the communities across Australia suffering.”
