Police Trying To Stop Tailgating Using A New Camera Dubbed “The Long Ranger”


Police have released video footage that shows motorists driving dangerously and too close to the back of other vehicles.

The incident was caught on the A417 in Gloucestershire by a new camera dubbed “The Long Ranger”.

The super-camera is so clear that it can capture law-breakers up to 1km away and can produce clear photos to catch the driver.

The footage released by police shows a white Ford Transit van driving too close to the car in front of it.

Driving too close to the back of other vehicles is known as tailgating and police are trying to stop this practice.

With the help of this camera, police will be able to identify drivers who drive dangerously or too close to the back of other vehicles.

Highways England figures show dangerous driving is the reason for one in eight road casualties.

Richard Leonard, Head of Road Safety at Highways England, said: “Tailgating makes the driver in front feel targeted and victimised, distracting their attention from the road ahead and making them more likely to make a mistake.”

“If you get too close to the car in front, you won’t be able to react and stop in time if they suddenly brake.”

“It is intimidating and frightening if you’re on the receiving end. If that leads to a collision, then people in both vehicles could end up seriously injured or killed.”

Tailgating can lead to a crash and police are trying to stop this practice using this new camera dubbed “The Long Ranger”.

Within a month, more than 1,000 speeding offenses have been recorded and police were able to identify the law-breakers.

The 56-year-old star of TV show DIY SOS, Nick Knowles was also caught on this camera holding his mobile phone while driving at 85 mph on the A417 Brockworth Bypass near to junction 11A of the M5.

He was banned from driving for six months by Cheltenham magistrates and was also fined £1,483.
