Among the many cases of racism that the death of George Floyd has once again brought up, the case of Breonna Taylor was one of the most heartbreaking.
Six months after her death, the city of Louisville, Kentucky said it has legally settled a wrongful death case with Taylor’s family.
Sam Aguilar, who has been representing Taylor’s family, confirmed that there was a financial settlement aspect to the case. A source who has insider information told CNN that the exact amount is in the millions, although this claim has not been substantiated.
Aguilar expressed mixed feelings about the settlement. While he lamented the fact that the city and its officials have taken far too long to get this case closed, he praised them for the genuine attitude with which they approached the process that he hopes will be repeated in the future.
Taylor’s story enraged many because it was quite clear that she had done nothing wrong. Taylor was fatally shot by the police, who were conducting a “no-knock” narcs investigation. It has since been reported that it was Taylor’s ex – not Taylor – who had links to narcotics.
Both representatives from Taylor’s family and Louisville officials, likely its Mayor Greg Fischer, will be present for a scheduled joint conference on Tuesday. Fischer had remained silent on whether there was a settlement aspect to the case.
In an after review of the deadly night, the police was shown to be wrong on so many different levels. First, they wrongly believed Taylor would be alone in her home when in fact she was with her boyfriend. Second, they consequently did not know that the boyfriend was legally armed.
Taylor’s boyfriend has explained his actions, saying that he shot the ‘intruders’ because he thought there was a home invasion going on. The police immediately returned the fire, during which Taylor was killed. There exists no body cam footage of the raid.
Although none of the 3 officers that were involved in the event face trial or punishments, the waves of Taylor’s death have rippled throughout society. From massive protests to bans on “no-knock” raids, Taylor’s death was not in vain.
