32-year-old Luciana Lira, a teacher at Hart Magnet Elementary, received a call from one of her student’s pregnant mother, Zully, who explained that she had contracted coronavirus.

Zully, who was going into labor at that time, told Luciana and she and her husband had listed her as their emergency contact as they had no other family members in the U.S.

The mother’s husband, Marvin, also told Luciana on the phone that both he and son, 7-year-old Junior, were waiting for test results as they had symptoms of coronavirus. Worried that he might infect their newborn, he asked the teacher if she could take care of the baby until they receive the results.

Medics performed an emergency c-section on Zully, who was severely ill with COVID-19 and was put on a ventilator.

Her baby boy, Neysel, was healthy and was taken home by Luciana’s husband, Alex. They agreed to become his temporary guardian while Marvin was waiting for his coronavirus test results.

But only a few days later, test results revealed that Marvin and 7-year-old Junior had coronavirus.

The hero teacher became an instant mother while continuing to teach her pupils remotely.

On April 18, Zully miraculously showed signs of recovery and she was taken off the ventilator. She was introduced to her newborn son via a video call two days later.

A week later, Zully was finally discharged from the hospital and an ambulance escorted her back home, where she was reunited with Marvin and their older son Junior. The three will have to wait to be cleared of coronavirus before they can meet baby Neysel in person.
