Joshim Nur has been banned from the school for life after marrying a 13-year-old girl and sleeping with her.
He was a physics teacher at the London Nautical School in Blackfriars when they got married.
Now 34 years old, Nur was 22 when he met the girl (Child A) for the first time 3 days before their arranged marriage during the summer of 2006. He flew to Bangladesh to see and marry her after watching a video made by the girl’s father.
Child A said she had sex with Nur right after their wedding night. After moving to the UK, she was brought to a family planning clinic and took contraceptive pills.
Last month, Nur said he thought his wife was already 18 when he married her. A Teaching Regulation Authority panel sitting in Coventry said his claims were not credible as Child A informed him she was only 13 and attending in Year 8 at school before they got married.
Nur told the panel he thought she was eighteen despite being familiar with the appearance of girls that age since he was working at a school.
He even accused the girl’s family of’ ‘deception’ and said he didn’t know her real age until she reported the story to the police in 2013. A bone test also confirmed that Child A was underage when they tied the knot.
It is unclear how long the two stayed together or if they already have kids.
“Mr. Nur now accepts that Child A was 13 years old in 2006. However, he maintains that he was unaware of this at the time of their marriage, believing her to be 18 years old,” the panel said.
“Mr Nur does not deny that he had sexual intercourse with Child A during their marriage. This is supported by the evidence of the Family Court Order which identified that ‘full sexual relations between the mother and father commenced in early part of 2007 when she was only 13 or 14 years of age’.”
The panel read a written statement from the girl who said she talked to Nur three days before their arranged marriage. She told him that she was only 13 and studying in Year 8.
“He stated he was unaware of her real age until she made a complaint to the police in 2013,” the panel chairman Dr. Robert Cawley said.
“Mr Nur stated that he had understood his wife was 18 years old at the time of their marriage. The panel saw evidence that this statement was supported by a marriage certificate which was used to apply for a passport for Child A following their marriage.
The panel did not find it plausible that Mr Nur could have mistaken a 13 year old child for an eighteen year old, and that this misconception continued over a four year period.
The panel was particularly concerned in light of the fact that he worked in a secondary school and had daily interactions with children of this age.”
The girl said they had sex right after marriage and was brought to a family planning clinic and took pills daily.
The panel said Nur should have known her real age but acknowledged he appeared to be acting under pressure from his own family to enter into marriage.
They ruled: “Mr Nur entered into a marriage and sexual relationship with a 13 year old child. Mr Nur did not demonstrate any insight into his actions or their impact on Child A.”
Decision maker Alan Meyrick said Nur will never teach again. “In my judgement the lack of insight means that there is some risk of the repetition of this behavior.”
