A 29-year-old teacher has been accused of having sex with a student in her car.
Lindsey M. Halstead, a former Waterloo High School teacher, was arrested by police after a 16-year-old student reported she had sent him nude photos.
Halstead was charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of sexual misconduct.
The student has been interviewed by police about what happened, which he claimed took place in November last year.
He said it was in September 2018 when the teacher contacted him on social media. After talking for a few weeks, Halstead started sending him nudes.
The teen told police Halstead picked him up from the library and they parked behind the Hampton Inn and had sex in her vehicle.
Speaking about how the teen felt during that time, he told officers: “I was pretty quiet and I just said a few words.”
He said that Halstead kept on messaging him that he eventually blocked her number. “At this point I was like, ‘This is weird, why is she still texting me?’”
Superintendent Terri Bavis said Halstead was teaching at the Waterloo Central School District from September 2014 to February 2018.
“The safety and security of our students is of utmost importance and all reports of any kind are treated seriously,” he said in a statement.
New York State police said in a statement: “Halstead is accused of having sexual contact with a 16-year-old subject in the town of Seneca Falls.
“Halstead was previously employed by the Waterloo School District from September of 2014 through February 2018. She then worked for the Midlakes School District as a long term substitute teacher from February of 2018 through April of 2018 when she was terminated.”
Police said releasing Halstead’s photo could encourage other victims to speak up.
