A school has been facing backlash after a teacher decided to shut students’ mouths with duct tape in order to stop them from talking while in class.

The controversial schooling method took place at Colwill School in West Auckland, New Zealand, where a teacher reportedly taped the mouths of students who were “talking too much” during class.

While the school defended the decision saying it was all a part of a “game that the children appeared to enjoy,” one mother expressed her anger over the teacher’s actions as she insisted her 7-year-old son was left “anxious” after the incident.

According to the boy’s mother, her son has breathing problems and is forced to take asthma medication on a daily basis.

Following the incident, the 7-year-old allegedly couldn’t return to school for two weeks because he was too traumatized to resume classes. He not only missed a Christmas concert but also two weeks’ worth of lessons in his absence.

As the upset mom added, she didn’t find out about the tape until her son’s classmate told his sister what had happened, prompting the news to reach the mother’s ears.

While the school teacher behind the stunt apologized to the 7-year-old’s parents for upsetting the boy, the school’s headteacher appeared to have defended the punishment method in a statement seen by Stuff.

According to the school’s principal, Rob Taylor, an investigation revealed that the teacher’s report that “this was [a] game that the children appeared to enjoy and wished to play with her was by all accounts the correct version.”
