Dozens of male teachers are going to school in skirts as part of ‘The Clothes Have No Gender’ movement.
The controversial campaign takes place in Spain where math teacher Jose Piñas decided to start a revolutionary movement after one of his students got expelled for wearing a skirt to school.
According to the reports, the 15-year-old boy was not only expelled but also forced to visit a psychologist simply because of his choice of wear.
After the issue went viral, several other teachers, including Manuel Ortega and Borja Velaquez, joined Piñas and his cause by ditching pants and wearing skirts to school instead.
Since then, the movement has picked up the pace and several other teachers across the nation followed suit.
As Ortega and Velaquez explained, they decided to join the movement after one of their male students got bombarded with homophobic slurs over the design featured on his T-shirt.
“A school that educates with respect, diversity, co-education and tolerance. Dress how you want! We join the campaign #clotheshavenogender,” Ortega wrote in his Twitter post after teaming up with Velaquez to wear a skirt to school during May.
The two teachers also insisted that the change in the way they dress for school has positively impacted their students.
The Clothes Have No Gender started back in November after Jose Piñas, a Basque Country math teacher, stood up for 15-year-old Mikel Gomez who got expelled and sent to a psychologist for wearing a skirt.
“20 years ago I suffered persecution and insults for my sexual orientation in the institute where I am now a teacher,” the teacher wrote as he shared a photo of himself wearing a skirt in school.
“Many teachers, they looked the other way. I want to join the cause of the student, Mikel, who has been expelled and sent to the psychologist for going to class with a skirt.”
