A teenager who was involved in a terrible accident while working was forced to have half of his body amputated or face inevitable death.
19-year-old Loren Schauers is an inspirational young man from Montana who was involved in a tragic accident as the forklift truck he was driving at a construction site swerved off a bridge and plunged 50 feet deep.
After the fall, the teenager found himself trapped beneath the industrial vehicle, whereas he remained conscious while his legs and his right arm got squashed under the weight of the forklift.
Following the grisly accident, the brave boy allowed the medics to perform lifesaving surgery during which they were forced to amputate everything from the waist down.
While the teen’s family and girlfriend, Sabia Reiche, were already saying their goodbyes to the 19-year-old after doctors told them he likely wasn’t going to survive, Loren miraculously pulled through.
“I was conscious throughout everything so I actually watched as the forklift fell on top of me and crushed my body,” the Great Falls teenager recalled in a YouTube video.
“Every medical professional I come across is pretty amazed by everything, especially with the story that comes along with my injuries.
“It wasn’t a hard choice to have half of my body amputated – it was basically a choice of living or dying. With Sabia assuring to stay by my side no matter what and all my immediate family being around me, it really wasn’t a hard choice for me!”
Praising her boyfriend for his dedication to making the most out of the situation he was put in, Sabia said Loren “has been super innovative in order to make himself as independent as possible.”
“Any time an obstacle presents itself in our new life, he just finds any way around it and comes up with a wild solution that a ‘normal’ abled person wouldn’t normally think of,” she expressed.
“If I was in his position, I’d probably just be a wallowing self pit of pity. So many people handle these things so differently and I feel like he’s really beat all odds, both mentally and physically.
“He’s done everything he can to make life as normal as possible for himself and for me personally, it’s something that I really just love about him.
“This crazy thing happened to us and he’s still just himself, he didn’t change, he does everything he can to be as independent as possible. I’m really proud of him.”
For his future, Loren plans on becoming an influencer, whereas the couple is looking forward to their wedding which is set to take place next year or in 2022.
“I have a very simple life now compared to what it used to be. There’s a lot more laying around than before,” Loren added.
“It was about three months after the accident that I finally wrapped my head around how crazy and miraculous it really is for me to be alive.
“We want to travel the world first and then have some kids and teach them to be better people than we are, so a pretty simplistic life.”
