A teen needed a lifesaving surgery after a needlefish that jumped out of the water pierced through the back of his skull.
16-year-old Muhammad Idul from Indonesia was fishing with his family when a needlefish suddenly jumped out of the water.
The long snout of the fish stabbed the teen’s neck and pierced through his skull. He was rushed to a hospital and underwent risky surgery to get rid of the fish from his neck.
Photos show how the needlefish pierced from under his skin to the back of his skull. The risky two-hour surgery involved two anesthetists and three surgeons.
Professor Dr. Syafri K. Arif said to local news site Makassar Terkin: “To remove the fish snout, one must be very careful because there is a large vessel in the neck.”
Muhammad is now recovering but he’s still in the hospital because of risks of infection.
A hospital general director said to Antara News: “The child is relatively stable, but at present, the patient is still feverish.
“We will wait for the fever to subside. Hopefully the fever won’t rise.”
TV show IFish described the horrifying photos as ‘worst nightmare material right here’ when they were posted on Facebook.
One person commented: “Unlucky but incredibly lucky at the same time. What a thing to happen.”
Another wrote: “WOW! I hope that he makes a full recovery. Its amazing how surgeons can deal with these types of injuries, prepare and execute the operation.”
A third added: “Thank God he survived.So lucky not to have died.”
Needlefish are distinguished by their long, slender snout which contains sharp teeth. They are renowned for jumping out of the water at up to 60km/h.
