A 13-year-old Texas teen was shot dead by his ‘best friend’ at his friend’s home in Pasadena.
Gabriel ‘Gabe’ Fernandez was playing with his friends at a friend’s home when his best friend shot him in the head while playing with a loaded gun.
The boys thought the gun was unloaded because the clip had been removed.
The boy’s mother, Jennifer Valdez told ABC News that her older son, Nick Fernandez, 15, called her and broke the news.
The mother said of her son’s best friend who killed him:
‘He loved my son. They were best friends. Now he’ll have to live the rest of his life knowing he killed his best friend. I feel remorse for him too… he’s a baby too.’
Gabe’s mother said: ‘[Nick] was just hysterical, telling me that “Gabe’s dead, Gabe’s dead.”‘
‘”What do you mean Gabe’s dead?”‘ she said, and then Nick told her, ‘”Gabe’s dead, he shot him in the head.”‘
‘I ran over and there was people standing outside and little girls crying. I could see where the bullet had exited out of his head,’
He was rushed to the hospital in the ambulance but 10 minutes later ‘the paramedic in the back told [the driver] to turn the lights off. I knew my baby was gone at that moment.’ Valdez said.
Gabe was in the eighth grade at Queens Intermediate School in Pasadena. He played defense on the Hornets football team and he will be buried in his school football jersey, Valdez said.
The boy, who killed his best friend, lives with his grandparents. His grandparents said they don’t own a gun. Police are still investigating the incident.
