A teen girl decided to take action and help a homeless man after she came across a touching note while walking the streets of Hastings, East Sussex, England.
As 16-year-old Charlotte Howard said, the note completely broke her heart and she couldn’t help but feel the need to help 37-year-old Anthony Johnson who has written the message.
The moving note read:
“Work wanted
“I will do a trial for free to show how I work. I don’t take drugs or drink.
“I will also do: Dog walking-minding, Window cleaning, Sloping, Gardening, Car valiting-washing, Housework, Cooking.
“Anything to earn a living and make life seem worth living. Help change a life.”
After Charlotte read the touching note, she immediately took a picture of it and pleaded for help on Facebook.
After the post went viral, landscape gardener Nelson Smith came across it and saw the potential in Anthony’s words.
“I have had problems with mental health in recent years and in this post, I saw someone trying to help themselves,” Nelson said, adding that he provided Mr. Johnson with a gardening job.
“I wouldn’t have got anywhere looking for a job if it wasn’t for her – she really is incredible,” Anthony admitted after getting employed.
“It’s not like I haven’t previously been asking for help but all it takes is an open-minded person like Charlotte to come along and help.”
As Anthony went on to explain, he’s been homeless for nine years, trying his best to recover from the past full of crime and drugs while in worst conditions possible.
“I didn’t want to do the things I used to do – my social circles used to be drug takers and criminals. Now it’s pastors and people doing outreach work,” Johnson said.
“Getting a job is about having something to do rather than rotting away on a bench – it’s about having something in your life and at the moment that seems to be coming back.”
Feeling grateful for this change in his life, Johnson was once again surprised when 16-year-old Charlotte raised over $1,300 to help the man buy an old caravan and make a temporary home out of it.
“Thank you for helping change what I have going on, thank you for understanding my situation,” Johnson said, addressing the people who’ve helped him out. “If I could write a message to thank every single person who donated then I would.”
