It goes without saying that ‘Honesty is the best policy’ but have you ever been presented with a predicament where you could have thousands of dollars for not telling a truth?
Let’s suppose, if we ask you the famous ‘What would you do’ question and tell you, you have found a bag full of $100 bills, and no one is around you, how would you react?
Would you take it to a police station? Would you try to find the right owner of the bag?
Maybe you’d say that of course, you will do whatever it takes to return it to its owner as you live by the rules, but in reality, once you are in that situation, the devil starts playing its part and you would have thousands of things going through your mind- $1000000 vs nothing for being honest.
But one young boy was able to beat his greed by returning a wallet having $2300 inside, even though he himself didn’t have the money to buy his lunch.
We know its not a usual story and you might not believe it to be true but the hero boy has been interviewed by the news channels and people around the world are applauding him for his honesty.
This is the story of Tommy O’Connor, a senior at Irvington High School, who found a wallet in front of a 7-eleven store. He opened the wallet to find out the address or any phone number of the owner but there was nothing except a lot of $100 bills.
Tommy could have just taken the wallet and no one would have come to know but he knew what exactly to do and how exactly he was raised by his mother.
He took the wallet to his para-educator, Andre Gomez. Andre told the Mercury News, “He was so concerned about finding the wallet’s owner. No other option even occurred to him. He immediately knew what he had to do.”
When they did a thorough search, they were able to find Veteran’s Identification Card inside the wallet with his name. Luckily, they were able to trace him and get in touch with him about his lost wallet.
They found out that the money belongs to a war veteran who had been saving it to pay his house rent and was very invaluable to him.
When the veteran met Tommy and Andre, he was so happy and proud of the young boy.
He gave $50 as a reward for his honesty.
Later on, when their story got popular on Facebook, KPIX 5, interviewed him and his family. People came to know that the family could hardly make both ends meet but still, the father was very proud of his son.He said, “With us living month-to-month, it is a big chunk of money and I’m so proud of him that he did that.
”What a beautiful story it is. Don’t forget to SHARE it with your friends and family.
