Two teenagers are being hailed heroes after they turned their car into an ambulance to save as many koalas as they can from devastating bushfires.
The two cousins loaded koalas into their vehicle and shared the video on Reddit.
“This is our little koala rescue,” one of them said in the video as he focused the camera on a mother koala hugging her baby.
“We are just trying to collect as many live ones as we can,” he added.
People have been left shocked by the blazes in Australia and the heavy toll bushfires have taken on wildlife.
One person commented after watching the video: “As an American who hasn’t been to Australia, this is mind blowing to me.
“Koalas seem so exotic and fantastical that I assumed they were hard to spot in the wild, let alone being able to just grab them. Major respect for these kind people who are saving them.”
Another wrote: “They look so terrified and exhausted. The world needs more people like your cousins.”
A third added: “The world is a better place with your cousins in it. It is an absolute travesty what is happening. I hope your family remains safe.”
Thousands of marsupials are believed to have died in the Kangaroo Island. The co-owner of the Kangaroo Island Wildfire Park, Sam Mitchell, said to Guardian Australia they have 50 injured koalas taken to them.
“At least a third of what has been brought in we’ve had to euthanise, unfortunately,” he shared. “We are seeing many burns to hands and feet – fingernails melted off. For some the burns are just too extreme.”
