When two teachers and 13 students went on a school trip on an island in Denmark, they were unaware of the sinister ahead of them.
Only 20 minutes after setting sail, their boat tipped and plunged the students into the freezing cold water.
Katrine, who was 16 when the incident happened, told BBC as part of the ‘Back From The Dead’ documentary: “It was so freezing, it was so cold and there was ice on the water.
“I landed under the boat and when I came up from under the water the nightmare began.
“Everybody was screaming and everything was like unreal. You could just see the panic. The teacher said that we had to swim in because otherwise we would die.”
Katrine and her classmates did their best to swim hundreds of meters to shore but seven couldn’t make it back.
Casper, one of students who couldn’t swim to safety, said: “It was hard weather, it was very windy. The boat flipped in the middle of the sea then all the people fell out.
“I couldn’t swim. One of my friends came over to me and tried to help me but after some time I was clinically dead because of the temperature of the water.”
They were stuck in the cold water for around 2 hours until paramedics finally arrived.
The teens’ hearts had stopped beating and upon arriving at the hospital, doctors increased their blood at one degree every ten minutes.
“They felt cold. They were ice cold. They’re clinically dead young teenagers,” Dr. Michael Jaeger Wansche said.
“When you are as cold as they were, we know that we can resuscitate. They are dead but not really dead.
“We still have a chance.”
It took 6 long hours before doctors heard a heartbeat. And miraculously, scans showed no brain abnormalities.
“I have learned what’s important and what’s not important. What is worth fighting for,” Katrine said. “I’m really happy that I’m alive.”
