In Quentin Tarantino’s debut feature “Reservoir Dogs”, one of the many issues that the characters discuss about is the right way to tip.

Because it is somewhere between a personal relationship and a commercial one, it is easy to see why so many have trouble finding the right way to tip.

When one waiter served four teenagers, he did it with the utmost respect and professionalism. However, because it was their first time dining out with out any adults the four 13 year olds did not know the proper etiquette in terms of tipping, and paid much less than the usual amount.

What the teenagers lacked in experience, they had a great sense of integrity and gratitude. After they heard about how much they should have paid the waiter, one of the children returned back to the restaurant nearly 10 days later with a handwritten letter in his hand.

As you can read from the letter, the teens say that it was an awesome night for everyone and how important the waiter’s role in making the night special was. At the same time, they honestly state and acknowledge their inexperience with properly handling a bill.

As the teens themself admit, they said they simply decided to gather all the change they had left at the end of the meal and used that to pay the tip. It seems to be that the change only added up to just over $3, most likely in small changes.

In the letter, the teens say that they felt devastated and sorry for what they did without malicious intent. That is why they decided to send one of them back to the restaurant to properly express their gratitude along with the right amount of tip for the waiter who served them.

The waiter, who shared this letter online, said it is extremely frustrating to see a customer who does not tip them properly even when they enjoyed the service. He said no one acted with the integrity of these teenagers, and thanked them for their compassion and kindness.

If there is a lesson to this story, it is that something much more important than making a mistake is learning from it and doing everything you can to correct the mistake as best as you can.
